Frequently Asked Questions

General

What is SignalHR?

SignalHR is a platform that gives UK employers, HR professionals, and individuals AI-powered guidance on employment law, alongside free tools and calculators and the option to refer more complex cases to independent HR specialists.

Who is SignalHR for?

SignalHR is designed for small and medium-sized UK businesses, HR teams, and individual employees who need clear, practical employment law guidance without the cost of a solicitor for every query.

Is SignalHR legal advice?

No. SignalHR provides general employment law guidance and information, not legal advice. It is not a substitute for advice from a qualified solicitor or regulated employment law specialist. For anything with legal or financial consequences, we recommend speaking to a professional or referring your case to one of our specialists.

Getting Started

Do I need an account to use SignalHR?

The free tools and calculators are available without an account. Creating a free account gives you a limited number of AI chat messages to try the service. An Essential subscription unlocks unlimited AI guidance, specialist referrals, and the full toolset.

What can I do with a free account?

Free accounts include access to all our calculators and checklists (including the Redundancy Pay Calculator, Notice Period Calculator, ET Time Limit Checker, and more), plus a small number of AI chat messages so you can try the guidance before subscribing.

How do I verify my email address?

After registering, we send a verification link to the email address you provide. You'll need to click that link before you can sign in. If you don't see it, check your spam folder or contact us at hello@signalhr.co.uk.

AI Guidance & Accuracy

How accurate is the AI guidance?

Our AI is built specifically for UK employment law and draws on guidance from ACAS and GOV.UK, kept up to date as legislation changes. That said, employment law is fact-specific and the AI can make mistakes — treat its guidance as a starting point, not a final answer, especially for anything with real consequences.

How current is the information?

Every Acas guidance page behind the AI's knowledge is automatically checked against the live page twice a day. Where a figure, rate or date has actually changed — as opposed to the page simply being reworded — that document is flagged for review, so an update is checked by a person before it reaches the assistant rather than being applied blindly. We also track the phased rollout of the Employment Rights Act 2025.

Even so, always double-check anything time-sensitive, such as a tribunal deadline, against an official source or a specialist before acting.

Can I upload documents for the AI to consider?

Yes, subscribers can upload relevant documents (such as contracts or policies) as part of a case, and reference our library of employment law guidance documents.

Why are there thumbs up and thumbs down buttons?

They are how we find answers that need fixing. When you rate an answer, that question and answer are stored so we can check whether the guidance was right and correct it if it was not. The screen we use to review them does not show who left the feedback, and all feedback is deleted automatically after 90 days.

What should I avoid sharing in chat?

Share only what the question genuinely needs. Some HR questions do require health information — a sickness absence, a fit note, a stress-related case — and you should include that where it is relevant. But there is rarely any reason to enter someone's full name, National Insurance number, bank or payroll details, home address, or date of birth. Initials or a job title will get you the same guidance.

Can I enter details about my employees?

Yes — that is what the platform is for. If you are using SignalHR as a business, you remain the data controller for information about your staff and we act as your processor, which is set out in Schedule 1 of our Terms. That also means you are responsible for having a lawful basis for the personal data you enter about other people, and for giving your staff whatever privacy information the law requires. The guidance above on what to avoid sharing is the practical way to keep that simple.

Specialist Referrals

What is specialist referral?

If your situation needs more than AI guidance can offer, Essential subscribers can refer their case directly to an independent HR specialist through the platform. The specialist reviews your case and responds with tailored advice.

Are specialists part of SignalHR?

No. Specialists listed on SignalHR are independent professionals, not employees of SIGNALHR LTD. We facilitate the introduction, but any advice or engagement is between you and the specialist directly. See our Terms and Conditions for more detail.

How do I refer a case?

From an open chat or case, select "Refer to specialist." You'll be able to choose a specialist (or be matched with one), and they'll be notified to review and accept or decline your case.

What does the specialist actually see?

They see your case: its subject, a summary of the situation, a chronology of the key dates and events, and any documents you have uploaded to that case. They also see your name and contact details so they can work with you.

They do not see your AI chat word for word. Your conversations are not stored, so there is no transcript to pass on — what they receive is the summary built from it. It is worth setting out anything important in your first message to them rather than assuming they have already read it.

What happens after a specialist accepts my case?

You'll be able to message them directly within your case, alongside everything described above. Once the matter is resolved, the case is closed and you can leave a review.

Subscription & Billing

How much does Essential cost?

Current pricing is shown on our Pricing page, with monthly and yearly options. Yearly billing saves roughly two months compared to paying monthly.

Can I cancel at any time?

Yes. You can turn off auto-renew at any time from your account's Billing tab. You'll keep full access until the end of your current billing period — no immediate loss of access.

Does VAT apply?

VAT may apply depending on your circumstances. Prices shown are exclusive of VAT unless stated otherwise.

Do you offer refunds?

We don't generally offer refunds for partially used subscription periods, except where required by consumer protection law or otherwise agreed with us directly. Contact hello@signalhr.co.uk if you have a billing query.

Can I use a discount code?

Yes, where a valid code is available, you can apply it in your account's Billing tab before upgrading. Codes typically apply to the first month only.

Data & Privacy

Are my chat conversations stored?

No. Your messages are sent to OpenAI to generate a reply and are held in your browser for that conversation only. They are never written to our database, we cannot read them back, and they are gone once you close the page.

What we do keep is the case record — its subject, a summary, a chronology of events, and any documents you upload — so that you and any specialist you are referred to can pick the matter up again later.

Is my data secure?

Yes. We use encrypted storage, secure HTTPS connections, and hashed passwords, and we never store your card details directly — payments are handled securely by Stripe. See our Privacy Policy for full detail on how your data is stored and protected.

Does OpenAI use my questions to train its models?

No. Content you submit through our AI chat is not used by OpenAI to train or improve its models, and we do not use your content to train any AI model.

Do you sell my data?

No. We do not sell your personal data to third parties or share it with advertisers.

How long do you keep things?

Account data and case records are kept while your account is active. Chat conversations are not kept at all. Feedback on individual answers is deleted after 90 days. Documents you upload are deactivated automatically if unused for 6 months and permanently deleted 90 days after that, unless you reactivate them. Payment records are kept for 7 years to meet HMRC requirements. Full detail is in our Privacy Policy.

How do I request my data or ask for it to be deleted?

Contact us at hello@signalhr.co.uk. Under UK GDPR you have the right to access, correct, or request deletion of your personal data, and we'll respond within one month.
